E-mail - using Squirrel mail remotely
Remote access to Squirrel Mail on the Zybert server. Please also refer to Squirrel mail under E-mail section.
To access Squirrel mail remotely, open port 8443 and redirect it to the Zybert server using the TCP protocol. For example:
Local Computer is the WAN address of your Zybert server.
Port 8443 will also need to be open on your Zybert server firewall.
In your browser address bar, enter https://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:8443 where the Xs are the IP address of your office server on which Squirrel resides.
A convenient way of doing this is to register a domain name and forward it to the above url. This is easier than having to remember your IP address.
To login to Squirrel you will need to enter your username and password. This raises a number of security issues, perhaps the most important being your password. If your password is short, a word found in a dictionary or even the same as your username, then this will be easily broken. A jumble of letters and numbers is the best, providing you can remember it!
Another thing to remeber is if your e-mail address before the @ is the same as your username on the server, then a potential hacker only needs to crack your password when attempting to gain illegal access to your server.
For instance if you are John Smith and your user name on the server is john then to make life a little more difficult for hackers, make your e-mail address j.smith @ yourdomain.co.uk. This can simply be aliased to user john on the server.
