Surge Protection

This is a copy of a communication sent to customers in June 2006 with regard to electrical surges.

In the recent thunderstorms a number of systems were affected to a greater or lesser extent due to electrical surges. One customer in particular (based in rural Gloucestershire) received damage to both their server and their router. Their data is safe but they have had to purchase new equipment.

The surge that caused the damage came via the phone line used for ADSL.

We are therefore suggesting that all customers check that both their connection to the phone line and their 230 volt mains connections are suitably protected with anti surge devices.

These surge protectors can be purchased from most electrical retailers.

The types of protectors to look for are:

  • Phone line protector that plugs in to the standard BT socket.
  • A 230 volt mains surge protector with standard 13 amp sockets
  • A 230 volt mains surge protector with standard 13 amp sockets and integral phone line protection

Some customers may also consider an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) which will keep devices running for several minutes in the event of total power loss while also giving surge protection.

Please note that both power and phone lines must be protected.

Whichever way you choose to do it, please check that you have adequate protection against surges.

It may be a good idea to check if the business insurance covers hardware damage caused by electrical storms.
