Disk space monitor

The Zybert data backup and archiving system is unrivalledin terms of data integrity. Not only is data backed up but all modified data is archived. It is useful to occasionally monitor the available disk space to estimate the point in time at which the disk may become full.

As the disk fills, space may be recovered by carrying out house keeping e.g. limiting the number of copies that are kept, the time for which they are kept and removing items that are no longer required. This is achieved using the GEM Archive feature.

Checking Disk Space
Server Status

At the login page of your server (there is no need to be logged in, but it does not matter if you are) there is Server Status at the top right of the screen. Click this. You will then be presented with two bar graphs. Click the one on the left 'Z1 disk usage'. This will enlarge the graph. Click this enlarged graph. You are now presented with a plot of the available disk space against time.

Usage Graph

Based on these data the predicted disk life is calculated. In the example above the disk was on the point of becoming full. Archive management was carried out and the majority of the space was recovered.

This is an interesting example as the administrator had not set up any archive management. All files and modifications were being stored. When it became apparent that the disk was getting full, the archive management was applied. This got rid of very many unwanted copies of big files and only kept the specified number of copies for a specified time. This immediately released a large amount of space and it is interesting to note that the graph from that point is much 'flatter'.
