Slow mail download from server

Attention: open in a new window. PrintE-mail

This applies to using IMAP.

If downloading mail from the server is slow, this may be due to Windows Firewall blocking port 113. This port is used to identify the "owner" of a connection. IDENT is used when you connect to mail servers, or to IRC servers, to find out "who" is using the service. With IDENT filtered, your mail server may take a long time to respond as it waits for a closed/open response.

If you are on a workstation permanently behind the GEM firewall, it is safe to turn the Windows Firewall off.

To open port 113 on the Windows XP Firewall go to Control Panel and double click the Firewall icon.

Windows XP Firewall Icon

Choose the Exceptions tab and click Add Port...

Add a Port to Windows XP Firewall

Give the port a name ( Ident 113 for example) and enter 113 in Port number:
However having port 113 open is a security risk. If you are behind another firewall, such as the one on the Zybert GEM server then it is safe to open this port. If you open port 113 on a laptop computer then whilst behind your GEM firewall you are safe, but outside the office enviroment you may be vunerable.

To overcome this conflict, click Change Scope... and select the radio button My network (subnet) only

Change Scope

Having clicked OK to these settings you should see Port 113 with a check mark next to it.
