IMAP and POP
IMAP
Short for Internet Message Access Protocol.A protocol forreading e-mail messageson your server without actually removing them from the server. They remain there and are backed up.
POP
Short for Post Office Protocol.A protocol used to retrieve e-mail from a mail server. The e-mail is removed from the server and placed on the computer you are using. The server does not back up e-mails as they have been removed.
Although POP3 mail is moved from the server to your PC - e-mail is still archived on the Z1, but not on a 'per-user' basis. Do not use POP to access mail on your server as you will not be able to access mail for this user in the future, either while on your Intranet or accessing your account using web mail - Squirrel.
There is however a scenario for using POP mail for accessing mail on your Zybert server. Should you wish to have your e-mail downloaded on to a laptop computer in order to read them away from your LAN, then set up an alias.
Exercise this option with caution.
If you are a user fred on your Zybert server, then set another user fredpop.
fred can then be aliased to fred, fredpop (fred will get converted automatically to \fred to avoid loops).
Use fredpop as a username with pop3 and fred for everything else, including IMAP.
As long as the POP3 account is used regularly, it will not even take any space on the server because pop3 will empty the fredpop inbox every time it connects.
